Fetal Movements

Fetal movements are a big discussion and something we really look forward to in pregnancy. In the UK, we follow research and evidence that looks at understanding your baby's pattern of movements rather than counting kicks, it is also not recommended to listen to baby's heartbeat at home yourself. Be mindful what you google as other countries follow different guidance.

Understanding your baby

If this is you first baby guidance usually says that you will usually feel baby move around 18-20 weeks of pregnancy. If this is your 2nd/3rd/4th or subsequent baby you tend to feel the movements a bit earlier on as you know what you're looking out for (this can sometimes be around 16 weeks). When your baby starts moving, it can take up until 24 weeks until they have a regular pattern but once you start feeling baby move then its important to start getting to know them.

"What is a pattern?" This is where it is so important to get to know your baby and when they move, sometimes it can be associated with eating, sitting, laying or mornings and evenings.

I usually say its like a conversation you are having with your baby, and all of sudden you notice they are not communicating back then it is vital you go and get checked by your maternity triage immediately. Make sure you have their number saved on your phone to save time googling. You are never wasting anyone's time... ever! Any midwife would love to ensure you feel reassured in fetal movements so always make sure you reach out if you are ever unsure.

Grow My Baby's Brain

Have you ever heard about this? It's so important and actually really helps get into the daily habits of growing your baby's brain.

From the moment of conception right up until they are two years old their brain is growing faster than it ever will in their whole lifetime, this is so important because the love and emotional connection we show them now will help them with social connections and emotional maturity.

So every day start doing little habits to help bond with your baby, singing in the car a favourite song, talking to your bump or even just spending time with the bump every single day, even getting your partner involved! Doing this helps them with bonding when they are a newborn and during those early years too.

We have a whole module on this in our Second Trimester Toolbox and we highly recommend checking this out!
